Going through the motion

October 26, 2007

Not talking about defecating here in case anyone is wondering! (refer to title)

Well, today was the mark of my 4th week at work. My sentiments?

- Didn’t know what to expect when i first started, was worried about a ton of things but everyone else around me seemed to act as if i was crazy to be so worried
- Well, i realized that there is no use worrying :)
- There are people around to show me the ropes, to guide and tell me what went wrong
- I need to ask more questions! Be more observant :P ..more proactive since there is no one to really check on what i know and what i don’t know
- There is always someone to have lunch with :) People are generally friendly and although there may be cliques already formed..i guess its like this everywhere else
- To have the passion in doing what i do/what i’m going to do. It’s easy to just go through the motion but once i remind myself why i’m in this for, all the effort seems to be worthed it.
- KPIs may be superficial and sometimes, we just have to have more faith to stay sane.
- Let loose. I realized that i can be quite reserved. Sigh, still need more time to adjust to the environment and ppl around
- Need to be more disciplined. Havent been journaling regularly in my personal diary, spending less time with Daddy, with people whom i need to care about
- Am i really that busy? haha..in fact not yet..but still, why do i have less time to do the above? tsk tsk…TIME MANAGEMENT!!!
- i am seriously surprised if u’re still reading till this point
- Thoroughness and seeing the objectives met are really important traits
-Clear-headedness
- Graciousness
- The top value here is ‘Care and Concern’, but do we practice it? Yes! at least we try to… No! we forget sometimes
- Need to overcome the fear of public speaking…it comes and goes and i think it started after i got my retainers (after braces)..that was a loooooong time ago though…oh well
- Induction programmes are *yawn*. I remembered the ppl i met though :), the free fruits (HPB ppl tend to be more health conscious), the Bridge of Hope programme was good, some just have this motherly quality in them that when you get to know them even for the first day you just feel at ease ( i want to have that too!), we didnt get to meet all the Directors!, saw the CEO for the first time, not as personal as i would like, should i join the union?…

TBC… too much to say for my first four weeks of working life! and i must say, it has generally been an eye opening experiance for me..exciting at times, *yawn* inducing at others…

How can it be different? How can this not just be any other job?

i love (most) kids

May 21, 2006

My first day working at the dinosaur exhibition at singapore science centre was fun! but tiring :P Guess it was the lack of sleep before that lah…(went to holland village with church frens after cell group)

I don’t know why but all of my jobs xcept for 1 or 2 deal with kids!!!! Why? hahaha..it’s just so funnylar but i really love them..sigh..altho’ i don’t really show it (or so i might think) :P It makes me wonder how some people could abuse children! :’(

Children can be so adorable (or not!) and looking at them..i just wish that i could be a kid again! The whole world is ahead of them, they have much less to worry about, their view of life has not been scarred with setbacks, hurts etc.

Back to the exhibition- it was actually mainly about Sue, the world’s largest and most complete (90%) T.rex discovered and Stan as well (another T.rex, 65% complete) but the kids being kids were more interested with the other kiosks like the sand pit with ‘dinosaur’ bones, DIY cardboard dinosaur …

At the sand pit: The kids kept digging up the bones and i kept burying them back until at one point of time I actually suggested a new game ie. ‘Why don’t you close your eyes and count to 10, let us hide the bones and then you find them after that?’ Hah..so much better after that, letting them bury the bones and to dig them up again while I just play along sometimes and do my job which is not letting anyone get hurt by the bones..some of them were quite sharp you know….some others were very cute, showing me every bone they find with this look of accomplishment on their faces…some had other agendas like building sand castles, acting like dogs digging for bones, taking sand and throwing them! some kept asking me which bone this and that was..and some asked ‘ Do you know what a blah-blah-blah-blah-saurus is? *blink blink* Thank God that there wasn’t much need for any form of sternness coz the kids were so obedient if i tell them not to do smtg…yay!

The other 2 kiosks (DIY cardboard dino and pencil shading) were not as interesting but they were at least not so tiring! (I now begin to understand more and more after each job why my mother was always so tired after work :P) DIY stands for do-it-youself right? Even with some guidance, some kids were just very difficult to teach! Some just kept shouting ‘Excuse me! Excuse me! Can you help me?’ at EVERY single step of the process! Made me feel like tearing out my hair… But once the kid gets it..it’s like wow! snowball effect :P Just need one to teach another…many of course had their parents with them and most of the time…the parents end up doing everything.

Much to learn about the exhibition and tried avoiding questions directed to me. Guess there’s still time to learn tho’

Sidetrack- I’ve realized that a fellow blogger has made it up to Kota Kinabalu! Oh nooo..need to train..need to train…

Here’s how he beautifully described his experiance click here

prefrontal cortex diff

Was doing a bit of research as i’m going to meet a Prof. later regarding UROPS (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science ) and bump into this! In case u’re wondering, the definition of the prefrontal cortex is…
——————————————————————————–

Prefrontal cortex: This area of the brain is thought to be involved in planning complex cognitive behaviours and in the expression of personality and appropriate social behaviour. The prefrontal cortex is found in the cortical regions of the frontal lobe which are anterior to the primary and association motor cortices. It is divided into the dorsolateral, orbitofrontal (also called the limbic frontal lobe) and mesial prefrontal areas.

Cognitive: Pertaining to, or characterised by cognition - the mental process of knowing, thinking, learning and judging.

Frankly, i’m quite afraid of doing UROPS. Have heard countless horror stories, and yet there were some good ones as well. Big sigh, is this what i want? Maybe i should expect the very worse and try to come out unscathed. Although I’m highly sceptical of that. Another big sigh!

*Edit*
As i was pouting and sighing and just feeling blahh..thot of how amazed i was by God’s grace!

Number 1: Essay topic spotting before exams! Not 100% of the questions tho’…Should have hadasked more and doubted less. But some topics were right smacked accurate. Gives me the chills just thinking about it :P

Number 2: Love gift from some mysterious person for my trip to East Timor. And i wonder who…??

Well pray that these numbers add up!

Field trip to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

September 25, 2005

Went for a field trip to BTNR last friday and it was nice and tiring at the same time. Why? Due to our time efficient TA :P

TA (teacher assistant) : ” Let’s go for a brisk walk and overtake the other groups in order to save time.”
Me: “Brisk walk.” *gahness*

And walk briskly we did. Up and down the hilly slopes, stairs, bridges with an occasional “When do you think this will finish aa?”

Anyway, the point of us being there is to see the conditions of the different type of forests (secondary, primary). As we walked from the open area to the primary (most pristine) forest, we could actually feel the temperature around us dropping. It was like blazing hot to natural air-condition coolness.

If I could choose one thing to remember from that trip (erm, of course i have to remember a lot more:P …), it would be that selective logging is not selective at all. The “selection” comes from choosing trees more than a certain diameter in length and then logging them down. However, this would mean that these trees would fall on other trees and thus cause them to be unintentionally logged as well. So, the point being? ? ? —There is no easy solution to everything—

Pictures from my fellow LSM3251 friend :)

One of the larger trees we saw that day (Butress roots reaching above normal human height)

A magnificent rainbow!

Ahhh! What a beautiful rainbow :) Got this out of the monthly (or is it weekly?) newsletter that I receive from National Geographic.Colour contrast well seen here..notice the light and dark regions below and above the rainbow? This phenomenon is caused by the refraction and reflection of light through water droplets. (learnt that in a physics module) Cool eh?
